It’s amazing how quickly people become prison abolitionists, or talk about how our prisons are overcrowded, when the prisoner in question is a white boy.
I don’t get why people are so bent on revenge. It is definitely tragic that someone lost his life, but the kid is 18 years old and has to live with the weight of someone’s death on his conscious. Prison is not going to fix him, all prison does is teach you how to be a criminal. As bad as it is, I don’t think he should be in jail because he probably isn’t really a danger to society. I think living with killing someone by accident will be a big enough deterrent for him not to text and drive.
Sure he killed a man with his reckless driving, and broke a woman’s leg, but gosh, prison won’t fix him. There’s nothing to fix! I’m sure he feels really bad about it.
I don’t text and drive because I can clearly see how dangerous it is. However, I do not agree with this punishment at all! It is WAY TOO HARSH! If that was your child, would you think it’s fair?
Honestly, one year in prison? How is anyone supposed to recover from that? Way too harsh a sentence for killing somebody through negligence.
And of course on the other side there are the really gross prison rape jokes.
I love America.
My cousin’s husband’s brother was in a bad drunk driving accident a few years ago. He was driving drunk and killed a promising young baseball player who everyone was talking about prior to this about how he was going to go pro soon. In his state the penalty for drunk driving and killing someone is life in prison. So that’s where cousin’s brother-in-law is right now. He has a family with young children. My cousin’s husband’s family is Latino. I don’t think any of the news stories said how life imprisonment for a first time drunk driving offense was way too harsh then.
