Health Insurance Plans Required to Offer FREE Birth Control by August 2012.

A huge step in the right direction toward *actually* lowering the abortion rate.

Ugh.

Ok, I understand birth control can have some legit health benefits for certain women with actual problems, but people seem to forget that birth control pills are medication and can cause major side-effects.  A friend was recently hospitalized because due to her birth control her body formed a number of blood clots, which she did not realize until one evening when she couldn’t breath after one had found its way to her lung.  Luckily she is married to a doctor who recognized the signs and took her to the hospital immediately.

Also, it’s not 100% effective even when it’s used consistently and properly.  If you’re using it as strictly birth control and can’t afford it, what happens if you get pregnant?  You won’t be able to afford a child… guess it’s abortion time, maybe adoption.

I’m sorry, I just really hate how so many people seem to live without considering consequences even for a moment.  Also, I don’t want my future insurance rates to be affected because they’re required to consider the number of women who do go on birth control as an easy fix, while because of my own heart problems that might disqualify me for certain medication and my family history (mom wasn’t even finished with a single round of birth control when she developed a major blood clot in her leg) I may never choose the pill.

Um, did you read the link? It’s not just the pill. It’s also voluntary sterilization, IUDs, diaphragms, Nuvaring, etc.

Your premiums would actually be going down, because right now insurance companies pay about $11 billion for unintended pregnancies. Pregnancies are fucking expensive, much more than fucking pills, an IUD, or a diaphragm.

Why don’t you read before you criticize? Because if you read the article and the HHS website, you’d know this.

…I’m sorry, is your case “It’s not 100% effective so why use it at all” and “Medicine has side effects so HEALTH INSURANCE shouldn’t cover it”?

Is this a fucking joke? Seriously, people.

Seriously.

Either way, WOOHOO, GOOD NEWS!!!
